VMC Neighbors Meeting - Special Meeting on Valley Medical Center Updates to Impacted Neighborhoods

Valley Medical Center (VMC) continues to provide critical health resources to residents of District 4 and the County as a whole, including emergency department, hospital inpatient, outpatient specialty care and mental health services. These services also have a substantial impact on the residents and businesses surrounding the VMC campus.

This meeting was held to provide an update on key VMC projects, including the design and construction of a new adult and child psychiatric facility to replace existing emergency and inpatient facilities.

MEETING DETAILS:

The County is home to 40 departments that provide programs and services that help our communities across a wide spectrum of need. The evening’s focus was on the Valley Medical Center main campus on Bascom at Moorpark, which is a critical resource to all of our 1.9 million residents.

The County’s hospitals and clinics are the largest unit in our overall County organization and along with the EMS and public health systems provide both safety net services and foundational health infrastructure that all Santa Clara County residents rely on, especially during the current COVID pandemic.

The Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is the second-largest public health and hospital system in California and is comprised of three hospitals; VMC at Bascom, O’Connor Hospital and St. Louise Regional Hospital, as well as eight health centers located throughout the county, four urgent care clinics, comprehensive dental services and numerous community based health services.

The main VMC Campus at Bascom and Moorpark is an acute care hospital with 731 licensed beds and offers the highest level of adult and pediatric emergency medical and trauma services, a regional high risk Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, an Burn Trauma Center, a Primary Stroke Center, an accredited Rehabilitation Center, emergency and acute inpatient adult psychiatric services, as well as a range of other specialized services – in some cases the only such treatment centers in the region.

The medical center hosts five highly competitive residency training programs and partners with Stanford University Medical Center for the training of residents and fellows in many Stanford-based specialties.

The VMC campus is also the location for a variety of specialty and outpatient services including the Sobrato Cancer Center, a Renal Care Center, and a Diabetes Center.

To highlight a few key programs and projects at the VMC-Bascom campus, the first speaker was be Paul Lorenz, CEO of the Valley Medical Center.  A second, more detailed presentation on specific plans that are currently in development for a new Mental Health facility to upgrading several existing programs on the VMC campus and to serve both adults and youth was also heard.
